English as a Second Language (ESL)

For students who do not use English as their primary language, Brandon Hall offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The ESL program enrolls first time learners as well as students who have had some English in the past.

Participating students begin in group or Specialized Instruction classes. Individualized instruction allows a student to progress at his/her own rate. Initially a non-English speaker has 2 ESL periods a day until they have reached the Advanced Level and is mainstreamed for physical education, math, and an elective (art, music, drama or computers). As both written and verbal English skills develop and mature, ESL students are gradually moved into larger group classes in mathematics, English, science and social studies.

International boarding students are encouraged to speak English only and to share various aspects of their culture and traditions with their peers. These students should also have a local guardian, in Atlanta or within the U.S., that they can visit for short holidays. All boarders at Brandon Hall, including International students, must depart campus for Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays, Spring Holidays and Passover/Easter Holiday. Questions related to the guardianship of an International student should be raised with the Admissions Office.

Summer School ESL Program

The summer ESL program is designed to increase skills in reading, writing, and oral expression for international students. Upper School ESL classes are for credit and will be arranged according to the student's proficiency.

Brandon Hall School is certified by the U.S. Immigration Service to issue I-20 forms to qualifying international students.

Currently, Brandon Hall enrolls students from all over the world including China, Korea, Vietnam, France, Columbia, Brazil, Cameroon, Ghana, Bermuda, India, and The Netherlands.
