Program Emphasis: To Turn Potential into Reality

Mission: Focusing on the strengths of the individual, Brandon Hall provides personalized college preparatory classes for students who seek a more intensive educational setting to strengthen, realize, and celebrate their full potential.

To help students reach this goal, we also can offer Specialized Instruction classes to accelerate their studies, to remediate &/or to appropriately match learning styles. Brandon Hall offers an academic program with several areas of emphasis: applied study skills (highlighting, outlining, early preparation, information gathering, note taking, memory techniques, test taking and questioning) organization, structure, accountability, the ordering of priorities, and multi-sensory/differentiated instruction.

College Preparatory Curriculum & Instruction

The college preparatory curriculum includes the following initiatives:
  • Multi-sensory and differentiated instruction
  • Supervised study at the end of each class period
  • Daily homework evaluation and accountability
  • Applied study habits
  • A Parent Portal to access daily and weekly progress

Academic Projections for the Individual

When a student enrolls, the office of admissions and the academic office review the information submitted and prescribe a Personal Education Plan (PEP), which assists the student in taking accelerated work, learning necessary skills, or making up or earning essential academic credits. Each following year, the academic office meets with students and their advisors to review the plan and to establish new course projections.

Each following year, the academic office meets with students and their advisors to review the plan and to establish new course projections. Given the needs of each student, the school reserves the right to prescribe individual graduation requirements to receive a Brandon Hall college preparatory diploma.

Class Sizes That Focus on the Individual's Needs

Specialized Instruction allows capable students to take an accelerated program to earn two years of credit in one year or one unit in one semester. When a student enrolls after school has begun, or has grades and skills that require particular attention, entry into Specialized Instruction may be required to meet the student's Personal Education Plan (PEP). This instruction also allows for total individualization and specific accommodations to meet the need of the student.

Group Classes Placed by Ability

Each individual learns at their own pace and in their own unique way. Therefore, Brandon Hall provides opportunities for group classes paced on ability. One group class might consist of students who have grade-level and above average aptitude in a certain skill, have a record of strong study and compensatory skills, and/or can handle a vigorously paced curriculum. Another group might consist of students who are developing their academic and compensatory skills and need a setting that allows for this development to be a focus of instruction. In both instances group classes placed by ability meets the individual needs of the students.

Honors and Advanced Placement credits are also offered.

Structure: Academic Class Followed by Supervised Study (SS)

To provide students with a consistent structure to help focus on their work, the school has designed a 14-period day: seven periods of 40-minute instruction, each followed by a 10-minute period of supervised study. In the study period, students begin their homework with the teacher supervising or assisting as needed. Except for physical education, fine arts courses, and science lab courses, teachers may not "teach through" the study period. Boarding students also have supervised study periods in the dormitory either in the study hall room or in their rooms.

Post Graduate (PG)

The PG Program is an individually designed program of study to strengthen academic and study skills, course knowledge, and maturity for college. During the PG year, students take courses that can improve upon their transcript, increase their grade point average (GPA), and/or raise standardized test scores. Full participation in the athletic program is available.

Grading Scale with Grade Point Average Values

90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
Below 60 = F

Honors Courses: an additional weighted point value of 0.5 for a "C" or higher.
