MLK Jr. Day of Service At Brandon Hall School
Students and Faculty join together on MLK Jr. Day to kick off a new Community Service Program at Brandon Hall School
January 16, 2012
From: Deborah Marshall, Director of Institutional Advancement
ATLANTA – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" This year Brandon Hall students will be attending school on MLK Jr. Day. Monday, January 16, 2012 will be a DAY ON, NOT A DAY OFF, as they join with faculty members to kick off a new, ongoing Community Service Program at Brandon Hall School.
"By inspiring students to give unselfishly Johnny Graham, Brandon Hall's Director of Diversity, exemplifies the vision of our school", says Headmaster and President of Brandon Hall School Dr. John Singleton. "Brandon Hall encourages students to help those who are less fortunate and emphasizes the importance of serving others through humanitarian efforts."
Students and faculty will be divided into work groups, volunteering at three of Metro Atlanta's nonprofit organizations. The first group will assemble 1,000 bag lunches for the Crossroads Ministry. These fresh and nutritious meals will feed 200 people for an entire week. The second group will go to the Gateway Center to organize a clothing drive and a food drive, serve meals to families and entertain the children. The final group will travel to the Chattahoochee Nature Center to assist with cleaning projects to get the center ready for visitors. In all, over 160 members of the Brandon Hall community will be working on service projects in the greater Atlanta area to honor the memory of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
The next event planned by the Community Service Program at Brandon Hall will occur on Saturday February 4, 2012. Members of the Varsity Panthers Basketball team will partner with members of All Saints Church in Dunwoody to assemble casseroles, salads and side dishes to feed 70 men who visit the Central Night Shelter at the Central Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Future service projects are currently in the planning stages, and will be announced shortly.
Founded in 1959, Brandon Hall School is located on a pristine 27 acre campus on the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, Georgia. Brandon Hall is a nonprofit, co- educational college preparatory day and boarding school for students in grades 5 – 12.
